Greenfields Community Primary School Newsletter January/February

{item_alt_tag}

Dear families,

We've had a great start to the spring term, despite the weather and the winter bugs still lingering. Your children returned to school after the winter break, ready to learn and try their best. We've had lots of lovely things happening in school; the police visited reception, our religious visits have begun, gymnastics coaching continues in PE and JJ Coaching is in school every Friday lunchtime to work with different year groups.

The children are focusing on art and geography this half-term, as well as all of the other national curriculum subjects. It has been lovely to see their artistic skills as well as hearing them talk about their geographical knowledge.

In the final week of this half-term, we have our celebration of learning events, Year 4 have their class assembly, we have our valentine's disco and to finish the half-term off we have break the rules' day. So, even with 2 weeks to go until the end of this half-term, we've got plenty of things to pack in.

Best wishes,

Mrs Gemma Robertson

Headteacher

~Never stop asking questions... seek out the answers~

The raised hands represent fostering our children to be questioning and evaluative of all they see and hear. Our children are encouraged to think originally about what they have learnt.

#BeOriginal

#Readyfortheworld

This book celebrates the spirit of curiosity and encourages children to ask their hard questions; "Why can't people live on the moon?" "Can I be president when I grow up?" "What makes a person good?" These are just some of the questions that come from one little girl with twinkling eyes and a curious mind. When the girl finds that her big questions make some people uncomfortable, she stops. But then she learns that her questions can solve problems and that asking questions is how we learn and grow.

Trips and Visitors

This half-term, we have been very lucky to have some trips out of school but also some visitors to school. Each year group from reception to Year 6 are visiting a different place of worship this half-term. Reception and Year 1 enjoyed a visit to St Columas Church last week and this week the other year groups are visiting the mosque, the synagogue and the Buddhist centre. We have also welcomed the police, who visited reception and Debbie, who co-ordinates our farm trips, has been in school working with Year 3. She will work with the Year 3 children for the rest of the year cooking, gardening and helping them to create their very own playground market. Year 5 and 6 have also enjoyed having music sessions with a real-life beatboxer.

Greenfields Forest School

We are extremely lucky at Greenfields to have the extensive Forest School that we have. This is why we make sure that all of our children get access to it through engaging and exciting sessions. Year 4 had their final Forest School session last week, and as always, our Muddy Bairns children have been exploring the great outdoors as much as they can.

Mrs Banks' SENDCo Update – January/February

It has been so lovely to welcome the children back into school following the busy festive break. The children have settled really well into the new term and we have loved seeing them returning with such positive attitudes. January can be a challenging month for many families, so our focus continues to be on supporting pupils’ emotional wellbeing and helping them feel safe, calm and ready to learn.

I wanted to share an important update about how mental health referrals are changing across North Tyneside. Schools and GPs no longer refer directly into CAMHS alone. Instead, North Tyneside Council and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust have come together to form the Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Collaborative for children and young people up to the age of 18.

Professionals, including schools and GPs, can now refer into this Collaborative. It meets daily (on weekdays) to consider each request carefully and decide, as a team of professionals, what the most appropriate support pathway is for the child or young person. This may include well-established services such as Specialist CAMHS or The HIVE Team, as well as newer services such as the Connect Mental Health Support Teams for Schools and the Early Help Emotional Wellbeing Team. The aim is to ensure children receive the right support at the right time, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Schools can still refer directly to the Connect Team but not directly to CAMHS. We will always keep families informed and involved if we feel a referral would be helpful.

If you have any concerns about your child’s emotional wellbeing or behaviour, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Working together is always the most effective way to support our children.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Mrs Banks

The National Year of Reading

{item_alt_tag}

The National Year of Reading 2026 is the biggest campaign in a generation designed to help more people (re)discover the joy of reading and make it part of their everyday lives.

Reading expands our world and sharpens our minds, yet fewer people are making time to read. This campaign aims to tackle the decline in reading enjoyment in the UK and reconnect people of all ages with reading as a rewarding activity. The campaign asks the nation to Go All In on their passions and interests for 2026 and discover how reading can unlock the things they already love – be that music, football, baking, family-time, sci-fi, or … anything.

Attendance and Punctuality Really Does Matter

As you all know, good attendance and punctuality offer your child the best opportunities in their education. Some of you may have been invited into school for a meeting to discuss your child's attendance. This is a supportive meeting where we discuss anything school can do to support your child to increase their attendance.
