Rights Respecting School
In September 2024, Greenfields became a Rights Respecting School. As a Rights Respecting School, we put children’s rights at the heart of school life.
What is Rights Respecting?
As a Rights Respecting School, we work with the UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK) to create a school that is safe and inspiring, where children and adults are respected, children’s talents are nurtured and a place where children can thrive. Through working with UNICEF, we embed these values into our daily school life and give our children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.
We put the UN Convention on the Right of the Child (CRC) at the heart of our practice to improve wellbeing and help our children realise their potential.
Rights Respecting is based on the principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation. Each class from preschool to Year 6 have chosen their own articles to be part of their class charter. This class charter is referred to daily to remind children what their rights are and what is expected of them.
In September the staff and pupils chose articles for our whole school charter:
Article 12. Children have the right to give their opinions freely on issues that affect them. Adults should listen and take children seriously.
Article 19. Governments must protect children from violence, abuse and being neglected by aanyone who looks after them.
Article 23. Every child with a disability should enjoy the best possible life in society. Governments should remove all obstacles for children with disabilities to become independent and to participate actively in the community.
Article 29. Children’s education should help them fully develop their personalities, talents and abilities. It should teach them to understand their own rights, and to respect other people’s rights, cultures and differences. It should help them to live peacefully and protect the environment.
Article 30. Children have the right to use their own language, culture and religion - even if these are not shared by most people in the country where they live/
