Oracy

We are an Oracy, Voice 21 school. At Greenfields, we embarked on our oracy journey in September 2025. Our Oracy Lead is Mrs Banks and our Oracy Champions are Mr Lumsdon and Miss Evans.

In school, oracy is a powerful tool for learning; by teaching students to become more effective speakers and listeners, we empower them to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them.

Through a high-quality oracy education, students learn through talk and to talk. This is when they develop and deepen their subject knowledge and understanding through talk in the classroom, which has been planned, designed, modelled, scaffolded and structured to enable them to learn the skills needed to talk effectively. Vision Statement for Greenfields Primary School

At Greenfields Primary School, we believe that every child deserves to be heard, valued, and supported to become a confident, curious, and capable learner. We believe education should nurture the whole child, academically, socially, and emotionally, so that all children can thrive in school and beyond.

Central to our vision is a rich, inclusive curriculum rooted in strong relationships, high expectations, and a shared language for learning. We place communication, collaboration, and respect at the heart of everything we do, ensuring that every child feels a sense of belonging.

Oracy helps our children to:

  • Express their ideas clearly and confidently
  • Listen actively and respond thoughtfully to others
  • Build vocabulary and deepen understanding across the curriculum
  • Develop confidence, resilience, and self-belief
  • Collaborate, problem solve, and think critically
  • Find their voice and use it with purpose and respect

At Greenfields, we champion and value:

  • Clear, confident communication in all its forms
  • Inclusion, equality, and respect for every individual, supporting our children to become empathetic citizens
  • Curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning
  • Strong relationships built on trust and kindness
  • The courage to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them

Our overall aim is to empower our children to speak with confidence, listen with empathy, and engage with the world around them.

School Values & Oracy

Oracy activities are explicitly designed to reinforce Greenfields Primary’s core values:

Be Amazed – nurture curiosity and wonder through meaningful talk.
Be Brave – build confidence to speak to different audiences, take intellectual risks and pursue challenging dialogue.
Be Bold – empower pupils to express ideas creatively and stand by thoughtful opinions.
Be Original – encourage original thought, problem-solving and imaginative expression through speech and discussion.

Rights Respecting Links

Embedding oracy supports UNCRC Article 12 — the right of every child to express their views freely and to participate in decisions that affect them. Oracy ensures pupils’ voices are heard and valued in school life and beyond.

British Values Connections

  • Democracy: Structured class debates and pupil voice forums.
  • Rule of Law: Agreed discussion norms that guide talk.
  • Mutual Respect & Tolerance: Listening to and learning from diverse perspectives.
  • Individual Liberty: Pupils choose topics, talk roles and express opinions confidently

All of the above contribute to preparing pupils to be active, respectful citizens.
