As we move into the final term of the school year, we also move onto our fourth and final value focus. This term we will be focusing on:

This value encourages the skills of reflection to ensure children understand how they have gained the knowledge they have. Our children know that their learning is not defined by content but by developing the skill of using what they know. It is a combination of confidence and caution in the right measures and at the right time. In the Early Years, this begins by children initiating their own learning. In our eldest children, it is developing subtlety in their opinions and thoughts; understanding that others may hold different viewpoints, but that they are able to act with respect and tolerance.

Over the course of this term we'll be showing you all the different ways we're learning to develop ...being bold!

We are going to be taking part in The Big Pedal this year. This is an inter-school national active travel competition. The competition is open for all of our children.. and grown ups too and it couldn't be simpler! On each day of the challenge schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling, walking, scooting or using a wheelchair to school.
|
Beginning on Monday 19th April we will be asking you to cycle, walk /wheel or scoot to school. Each day your child's teacher will count up the number of children being active on the way to school and enter our results into the national leader board.
|

Be bold... at Greenfields
|
|
|
This week in English we have been reading the book 'Yucky Worms' by Vivienne French.We are really enjoying this book and now know lots of interesting facts about worms. We wanted to learn more, so we were explorers in our garden and made our own class womery. We can't wait to see what happens by next week!
|
|
|
|
As part of our Art work, we are exploring the work of Claire West. She is an artist who uses colour, line and spirals with a sole purpose to make people happy. This led year 1 on their own hunt around the school grounds to find colour. We took photos on the iPad and voted for our favourite one. We then each looked closely and identified a section within the photo that we liked. We tried to recreate this using pastels.

We made some natural prints outside in forest school. Each child found a natural object that they could use and put their own print on the page. They were bold by making their own original and individual choices.
|
|
|
|
We have started reading our new book in English – Eye of the Wolf by Daniel Pennac. We began by looking at the covers and the blurb and also the first few lines of Chapter One. I was so impressed with Dalton’s predictions and how he was able to explain his ideas and thoughts. A great start to the new term!

|
This half term we have decided to start our term by looking at the book, 'A Galaxy of Her Own. Amazing Stories of Women in Space.' We have chosen this book because of the pioneering women it features who weren't scared to try new things and be be bold!
|
|
|
|
We have been bold while learning about place value in Maths, exploring different types problem solving questions. Including finding and correcting mistakes in numner sequences and working backwards to find the answer in rounding.
|
|
|
We have started reading ‘Millions’ by Frank Cottrell-Boyce in English. The main character, Damian, comes across a huge amount of cash which he then has to make decisions about. It is an incredible opportunity for him and his brother, but he also has a huge sense of responsibility - what do you think he does with all the money in the end? After reading chapter 1 we wrote in role to Damian’s dad explaining our worries about him.

In Art, we have been creating geometric patterns by placing tape in different places and removing it after we have applied colour to create the line effect.
We had lots of opportunities to be bold and original with our art work, by deciding where we would like to put the tape, the shapes we wanted to create and the colours or tones we wanted to use
This was only our first lesson in the series so we are beginning to develop our skills to create a final piece of artwork.

Riley and Archie A worked really hard in forest school to collect the natural resources to make this amazing picture of a dinosaur! They didn't think they would be able to make anything at first but after seeing what was around they had the bold idea of trying to make this 3D picture. It was amazing how well it turned out!
|

Ready for the World Sessions
|
The Greenfields Ready for the World sessions support the children’s understanding of the learning behaviours in the real world. They take place in the last 30 minutes of each week on a Friday. This term we are looking at being bold. Linked to the whole school values.
|
Each year group uses this time to explore in depth a person who embodies our school values. The person studied could be from the past or the present, local or international, young or old, but someone that is perhaps less well-known for their contribution to society; someone who the children may not have usually found out about. The learning over the course of the half term will culminate in a floor-book produced by each class.
|
|

We will be looking at Captain Tom Moore this half term as he links to our school value 'Be Bold'. He was a British Army officer and a national hero who raised £32.8 million for the NHS during COVID-19.
|
This term year 1 are looking at Antony Gormley as our inspiration to be bold. He is famous around the world as a sculpture and has won many award for his work. The children will have opportunities to learn about his work, his links to the North East and make their own sculptures.
|
|
In 2JI we will be looking at Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was a man known for fighting for independence and civil rights in India, creating movements for non-violence and fighting for freedom across the world. The day Gandhi was born is known as the day of non-violence. Bold in many ways and strong enough to create change globally.
|
|
In 2DL we are going to be looking at Roy Lichtenstein.
|
|
Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York in 1923. He became famous for his bright and bold paintings of comic strip cartoons as well as his paintings of everyday objects. He was one of a group of artists making art in the 1960s who were called pop artists because they made art about 'popular' things such as TV, celebrities, fast food, pop music and cartoons. Roy, along with some others started a completely new art movement, like nothing anyone had seen before!

This term we will be finding out about an artist who really was bold – Pablo Picasso. Picasso was a Spanish painter and sculptor. He loved to experiment with different styles of painting and through these experiments he created Cubism. This was where the artist would paint a common object or person from lots of different angles in one picture. Picasso’s colours were rich, bright and vibrant. Today, Picasso is

considered to be one of the greatest artists of the 20 th century.

|
In our ready for the world sessions we have decided to learn about Valentina Tereshkova the first woman to travel into space. After reading about Velentina we all wanted to find out more about her bold adventure to space.
|
|
5EE are going to be looking at the life of Mary Anning. She was a person with very few opportunities - young, poor and female in the early 1800s - yet she has had huge influence, making some of the most important geological finds of all time. She perfectly embodies our ‘be bold’ concepts of influence , fairness and opportunity as she was never properly credited during her lifetime.

In 5GH we will be learning about Wangari Maathai in our ready for the world sessions. She was an environment and political activitst who was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree and the founder of the Green Belt Movement.
|
|
In 6WB our ready for the world person this term is Desmond Tutu - anti apartheid campaigner and civil rights activist who has spent his lifetime campaigning for cilvil liberties and social justice.
|
|
6AB's Ready for the World sessions are going to be based on Dame Ellen MacArthur. In 2005, she set the world record for the fastest non-stop voyage around the world on her first ever attempt. She represents the part of our 'Be Bold' value that encourages us to be the explorers of tomorrow. Since retiring from sailing, she has turned her attention to the global issue of plastic pollution in the oceans and inspires others to be responsible citizens that care for the environment.

After the very challenging 12 months we all have faced, I know some families may be looking ahead and thinking about holidays for the future- please see the school calendar with term dates for the academic year 2021/22. Please note the training days when school will be closed to children. We are respectfully requesting families not to book holidays during term time- they will not be authorised. I am sure that you would agree with me; it is really very important that your children are in school for the whole of the year.

If any of our families have any old android phones that they have finished with, which may be lurking in a drawer, we would love you to donate them to us for our Year 4 computing learning all about data loggers. Any phones donated will be wiped of data so that they are safe for the children to use.

EXCITING NEWS
You will of course all remember that in September, with the help of the children, we changed our school logo and values statements.
|
I know that many parents have already started to think about next school year. Over the course of the next few weeks we will be bringing you some information about our new uniform for September. We hope that the changes we are bringing will make uniform much more affordable and readily available to all of our families.
|
In the meantime, if your child has out grown their green sweatshirt, please do not replace it; please do contact us as we have some that you can use. Alternatively, if you would like to buy a sweatshirt, we are asking parents to replace with a plain NAVY sweatshirt or cardigan.
|
|
Currently, Asda is stocking blue sweatshirts- 2 sweatshirts for £5.
|
|
|
|
|
You will have received a letter this week which is asking parents and carers about the types of extra-curricular opportunities you would like to see available for your children.
|
Please do take 2 minutes to answer our questions so that we can begin to make plans for the new academic year in September.

REMINDERS

Drop off and collection times - please make sure that you are keeping to your bubble stagger time for collection and drop offs.
|
Year 6, 5, 4 and Reception 8:45am - 3:05pm
|
The 50p breakfast club begins at 8:15am- we will take children up until 8:30am, when the doors will be closed.
|
Late collection of children - please make sure that you are on time to collect our children at the end of the day. We have no facility to put your child into our out of hours provision at the moment due to current restrictions around bubble groups.
|
