History

One of our curriculum focus subjects this term is History. Mrs Lumsdon is our History Subject Leader and Specialist Leader of Education for History. This is what he says about history...

" I love History- everyone in school knows that! I love the way we can learn so much about the present by really investigating the past!"

We aim to provide a high-quality history education that will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We aim to inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Our curriculum will help pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Take a look at some of the fabulous work we have been doing in History this week

YEAR 3
This week we have been looking at Greek inventions and how we are using them now still in the present. We were amazed to find out the Greeks invented alarm clocks, early medicine and water mills! We had ten inventions to look at and we selected what we thought were the top 3 most important and explain why we thought this.
Year 3
YEAR 2
In Year 2 we have been learning about significant activists throughout history that have sought equality amongst people and shown 'bold' qualities, our question is 'Have humans always shown fairness to each other?' . So far we have learned about Rosa Parks and her brave refusal to give her seat based on the colour of her skin and we are now learning about Malala Yousafzai who refused to give up her education because of her gender. We have one more individual to learn about but we can already see the links forming in the children's minds!
Year 2
YEAR 6
In Year 6 we have been understanding British chronology and then considering different eras in terms of their society, politics and economics. We looked at Iron Age hill forts and used clues to understand what they teach us about this era.

choose happy
This week children in school have been writing uplifting messages for the future on our May day flags. Look out next week to see them being displayed on the drive. If you would like to join in with us, you can collect a flag from the driveway from Wednesday and write your own positive message for the future.

New School uniform

You will of course all remember that in September, with the help of the children, we changed our school logo and values statements.

Next week we will be sending out information to parents about what our uniform will be in September and how and where to buy it.

I know that many parents have already started to think about next school year. Over the course of the next few weeks we will be bringing you some information about our new uniform for September. We hope that the changes we are bringing will make uniform much more affordable and readily available to all of our families.

In the meantime, if your child has out grown their green sweatshirt, please do not replace it; please do contact us as we have some that you can use. Alternatively, if you would like to buy a sweatshirt, we are asking parents to replace with a plain NAVY sweatshirt or cardigan.

Currently, Asda is stocking blue sweatshirts- 2 sweatshirts for £5.

Reading recommendation

"Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11." by Brian Floca

Beautifully illustrated is the tale of the steady astronauts clicking themselves into gloves and helmets, strapping themselves into sideways seats. Here are their great machines in all their detail and monumentality, the ROAR of rockets, and the silence of the Moon. Here is a story of adventure and discovery—a story of leaving and returning during the summer of 1969, and a story of home, seen whole, from far away.

PE uniform

Please don't forget that for PE, our school uniform is a white unbranded t-shirt and blue/black shorts or tracksuit trousers which are unbranded.

Football strips are not permitted.

Thank you for your support.
holiday
After the very challenging 12 months we all have faced, I know some families may be looking ahead and thinking about holidays for the future- please see the school calendar with term dates for the academic year 2021/22. Please note the training days when school will be closed to children. We are respectfully requesting families not to book holidays during term time- they will not be authorised. I am sure that you would agree with me; it is really very important that your children are in school for the whole of the year.

Request!

If any of our families have any old android phones that they have finished with, which may be lurking in a drawer, we would love you to donate them to us for our Year 4 computing learning all about data loggers. Any phones donated will be wiped of data so that they are safe for the children to use.
Thank you!
